“As of 14:00 on February 15, nine local residents were rescued alive from under the avalanche through the efforts of rescuers,” Umeda Yusufi, spokeswoman for the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense of Tajikistan, said.
According to her, as a result of an avalanche in the city of Khorog, 22 residential buildings were damaged: four houses were completely destroyed, 18 were partially destroyed. In addition, an avalanche covered the building of the Afghan consulate in Khorog, power lines were also damaged, and there is currently no electricity in Khorog.
“The work to provide assistance to the families of the dead and the wounded, as well as the course of liquidation of the consequences of the disaster, was taken under the personal control of the head of state. An emergency response headquarters has been created and is working around the clock. Employees of the Central Office of the CoES have left for GBAO. The commission on emergency situations has begun work on the ground to assess the damage “, – explained the press secretary of the CoES.
According to her, another person died on the Dushanbe-Khujand road. “Today, an avalanche descended on the 65.8th km of the Dushanbe-Varzob highway, four cars were under it. Drivers and passengers were rescued by the efforts of the rescuers of the CoES, employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the IRS road service. Unfortunately, one driver died,” said Yusufi .
She noted that the avalanche danger in the region will continue for another three to four days. Rescue work continues.
