The intense environment of the Ryder Cup in Italy is now in the rearview. The PGA TOUR schedule is rolling on in Jackson, Mississippi with the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Young phenom Ludvig Aberg is the only player who participated in the Ryder Cup to make the trip to the United States, but the second fall event in the FedEx Cup brings plenty of opportunity for young players looking to make a splash and secure their status.

Last year’s result
Mackenzie Hughes claimed his second career PGA TOUR victory in dramatic fashion, outlasting Sepp Straka in a playoff. The Canadian’s trademark putting was on full display down the stretch, with clutch strokes on virtually every hole to secure his spot in the playoff. Straka fired a final-round 67 to leap into the tie with Hughes but he was unable to birdie when his 18-footer just missed. That set the table for Hughes to pour in an eight-footer and take home his first title in six years.

Chance for first win
While Sanderson Farms doesn’t regularly bring heavy star power to the field, it has become a marquee event for those eyeing a first win on the PGA TOUR. The tournament has a history of delivering massive breakthrough moments for younger players and unlocking everything that comes with a victory, including the coveted two-year exemption. First-time winners claimed the Sanderson Farms Championship trophy every year from 2014-19. Seven of the nine players at the top of the betting oddsboard, including Aberg, are winless on the PGA TOUR.
Ludvig’s Ryder Cup hangover
Despite the Ryder Cup ending just three days ago in Italy, Aberg will still tee it up this week in Jackson. The 23-year-old Swede was playing college golf just five months ago but found himself in the cauldron of golf’s most pressure-packed event. He teamed up with Viktor Hovland to deliver a record 9&7 foursomes win on Saturday and finished with a solid 2-2-0 mark for the weekend. Now he returns to the grind of stroke-play events hoping to boost his FedEx Cup ranking. Aberg currently sits 136th but is already locked in for next season due to his PGA TOUR University exemption. However, he will certainly be eyeing a spot inside the top 60 to secure a place in the first two signature events in 2024.
FedEx Cup fall rolls on
The Sanderson Farms Championship doubles as the second event on the FedEx Cup fall schedule. The top 50 from August’s playoffs are locked in, but there are 75 slots up for grabs to secure status for next year. As an added bonus, the players ranked 51-60 at the end of the season make the field for the first two lucrative signature events next year. Six of the players ranked 60-70 are competing this week and looking to move inside that line.
