Nyandoro’s program takes aim at generational poverty in Jackson, Mississippi. The longest-running guaranteed-income program in the United States just turned five years old — and it’s led by a trailblazing woman in Mississippi named Aisha Nyandoro. As the founding CEO of Springboard to Opportunities, a nonprofit working to end generational poverty, Nyandoro launched an initiative called the Magnolia Mother’s Trust (MMT) in 2018. It gives $1,000 monthly checks — no strings attached — to Black mothers living in affordable housing in Jackson, Mississippi. So far, the initiative has served over 300 mothers. MMT is the first guaranteed income program to specifically target extremely…
People in Mississippi’s largest county are demanding answers about why some polling places ran out of ballots and voters had to wait for them to be replenished on the day the state was deciding its most competitive governor’s race in a generation. It’s unclear how many people left without voting, and activists and local leaders say election officials’ failure is shocking, especially in a state where civil rights leaders were beaten or killed in the 1960s and earlier to secure voting rights for Black residents. “If you can’t vote, that’s a problem for democracy,” said Paloma Wu, a Mississippi Center for Justice attorney…

LIVE OAK, FLORIDA — President Joe Biden saw from the sky Hurricane Idalia’s impact across a swath of Florida before he set out on a walking tour of a city recovering from the storm Saturday. Notably absent was Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican presidential candidate who declined to join Biden after he suggested that the Democrat’s presence could hinder disaster response efforts. Biden, when asked about his rival’s absence, said he was not disappointed by the turn of events, but welcomed the presence of Rick Scott, one of the state’s two Republican U.S. senators. He pledged the federal government’s total…

A federal judge has approved a deal that puts the man who is already in charge of Jackson’s water, to also oversee the city’s sewage system. The Environmental Protection Agency Justice Department, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, and the city of Jackson, Mississippi, agreed last week to a stipulated order that will expedite needed sewer system repairs and to address spills of raw and undertreated sewage into homes, businesses, streets, yards and waterways. Under the terms of the agreement, the federal court appointed Ted Henifin as interim third-party manager of the city’s sewer system. Henifin, who has been serving as interim…
Hundreds of people took advantage of the warm, sunny weather Saturday to visit the final day of the Crystal Springs Tomato Festival. Whether you were enjoying a glass of fresh-squeezed lemonade, shopping the flea market or stocking up on locally grown tomatoes, chances are you experienced what Mayor Sally Garland says was “small town at its best.” She said the event seemed to have a larger turnout this year, thanks, in part, to the milder temperatures. “A few degrees in the weather changes everything,” she said. “People stayed longer, too.” Garland evidenced that by telling WLBT some vendors were still…
Two men — one of whom was shot in the mouth by a law enforcement officer — announced on Tuesday that they will file a federal civil rights lawsuit against a Mississippi sheriff’s department alleging a pattern of excessive force against Black people. In a news release announcing the lawsuit, attorneys for Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker also publicly identified for the first time the deputy who they say put a gun inside Michael Corey Jenkins’ mouth before firing it. Parker confirmed the deputy’s identity in a follow-up interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday. The upcoming lawsuit…
