The number of teenage girls experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors increased during the second year of the pandemic, new federal data showed. The percentage of high school female students who seriously considered attempting suicide rose from 24.1% to about one-third, or 30%, between 2019 and 2021, according to the latest results of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, published Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The percentage of those who made a suicide plan increased from 19.9% to 23.6% and there was also an increase in suicide attempts from 11.0% to 13.3%, according to the CDC survey. The Mississippi River drought was big news when barges got stranded, receding waters revealed historic artifacts, and river traffic briefly ground to a standstill in October. The Jacksonville City Council early Wednesday morning approved legislation that bans any message projected onto someone’s building or property without permission. City Council’s agenda included two identical bills that were created to address a series of hate messages that recently appeared in Jacksonville. Opening statements began Tuesday in the trial for Shaetavia Cooper. Cooper is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 16-year-old Teneria McClendon. The owner of the Hotel O in North Jackson has 150 days to bring his facility into compliance with city code or face jail time. Friday, Jackson Municipal Court Judge Jeffrey Reynolds found Noah Muthanal guilty for multiple violations of the International Property Maintenance Code as adopted by the city of Jackson, and sentenced him to 90 days behind bars.
