The U.S. military said Sunday it has carried out an operation in Haiti to evacuate some embassy personnel from the country and will bolster security around the U.S. Embassy amid escalating violence. “This airlift of personnel into and out of the embassy is consistent with our standard practice for embassy security augmentation worldwide, and no Haitians were on board the military aircraft,” the U.S. Southern Command said in a statement. “Our Embassy remains focused on advancing U.S. government efforts to support the Haitian people, including mobilizing support for the Haitian National Police, expediting the deployment of the United Nations-authorized Multinational…
When Jackson, Miss., Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba appeared before cameras and microphones earlier this week, he was there to deliver another grim report on the city’s troubled water system, which officials have been struggling for months to patch while they plan for a more permanent fix. Lumumba said the winter storm that swept across the country last week —plunging much of the South into a rare deep freeze — had burst more pipes in a badly compromised distribution network, forcing a new boil-water notice to be issued. “Obviously, we are dealing with the worst case scenario,” he said a day…

On Wednesday, State Auditor Shad White addressed the U.S. House Ways & Means Subcommittee on Work and Welfare on the Mississippi welfare scandal. White said he presented the case to lawmakers in Washington, D.C., and emphasized the need for stronger safeguards to prevent such fraud in the future. “My hope in testifying today is that the story of what happened in my home state will help ensure that it never happens again elsewhere,” he said. The news of the welfare scandal broke in 2019 when the State Auditor’s office received a tip regarding a potential kickback scheme involving the Mississippi Department…
The starting point for any review of Australia’s international strategy must be an assessment of the future US-China relationship, focusing on possible threats and opportunities. A good start was made in a speech by Australian Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, in April 2023. While Wong thinks that the United States will remain “indispensable,” she understands that it will no longer be the dominant power in Asia. Instead, Wong said that Australia’s national interest is to bring about a region where all countries benefit from a strategic equilibrium where no country dominates and no country is dominated. The Chinese economy overtook the US economy in 2016…
North Mississippi Health Services is laying off employees, cutting their hours and reassigning them to different jobs. The health system announced the changes in an internal email to staff on Wednesday, sent on behalf of CEO Shane Spees. It is unclear how many and what kind of employees are being impacted by the layoffs and reduction in hours. Kim Marlatt, the health system’s vice president of marketing, refused to answer any questions about the decision. “Financial losses limit the funds available to staff beds, maintain technology and grow services,” the email reads. “To fulfill our mission — our responsibility to…
Mississippi Comic Con kicked off at the Mississippi Trade Mart on Saturday, June 24. Organizers said the two-day event will be filled with costume and video game contests, panels by professional cosplayers and comic artists and Q&A sessions with celebrities. “My favorite part about Comic Con is being able to dress up in cosplay, and people recognize your cosplay and compliment you on it, and it makes me feel really good,” said Molly Mayhem, who attended the event on Saturday. “They have different events where the big the speakers come, and they speak and they tell you about different things.…
As summer approaches and people prepare for outdoor sports, vacations, and other activities, hotter temperatures are settling in. While the season is typically welcomed for its sunshine and warmth, it’s also becoming host to more extreme heat days. Across nearly 200 metros, the average number of extreme heat days in 2022 was 51, 23 more days than the 1970s average. The trend is a public health concern and a clear indication of climate change’s impact on overall temperature trends. Senior populations are most vulnerable to extreme heat and comprise the majority of extreme-heat-related deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control…
Mississippi’s capital is collecting only a little more than half of the money it bills for water use, far below the rate at which most American cities obtain such fees, Jackson’s federally appointed water manager said Monday. Ted Henifin, appointed in November by a federal court to help improve Jackson’s troubled water system, told reporters the city is collecting about 56% of the water fees it issues. That compares to an industry-standard above 95%, he said. The uncollected bills equate to about $50 million a year in lost revenue for the city, where roughly a quarter of residents live in…
