The re-registration of SIM cards in Tajikistan has been extended for another year, Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Ramazon Rakhimzoda said today at a press conference.
The re-registration period was supposed to expire today, February 15th. But once again it was extended. However, until what date, the minister did not specify.
At the beginning of January 2023, according to the Communications Service, 5.56 million mobile subscribers underwent re-registration of SIM cards.
At the same time, another 2 million SIM cards remain outside this field, of which 880,000 are active.
As Ilkhom Atoev, deputy chairman of the Communications Service of Tajikistan, said earlier: “2.1 million subscribers are registered with old passports. Of this number, 800,000 SIM cards are active, and they have not been re-registered for new pospartas.”
Recall that a large-scale campaign for re-registration of SIM cards in Tajikistan has been going on for more than six years, since 2016.
In December 2015, the Tajik government amended the Law on Electric Communications to require mobile operators to re-register SIM cards.
Prior to this, SIM cards in Tajikistan were sold without a passport or even distributed free of charge.
In April 2016, a government decree was issued that obliged the communications service to re-register all SIM cards by February 15, 2023 and ensure that no more than two numbers of any telecom operator are registered in the name of one person.
But you can re-register only with new ID-passports, which contain the biometric data of the owner. Thus, holders of old-style passports cannot re-register SIM cards.
In addition, since 2016, Tajikistan has banned the free sale of SIM cards on the streets, and points of sale must obtain a license.
