Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama sharply rebuked British Home Affairs Minister Suella Braverman for her comments about “Albanian criminals” entering Britain by boat, DPA reported, BTA reported .

During his visit to Britain, Rama described Braverman’s comments as “a very embarrassing moment for British politics” and negatively affecting the relationship between the two countries. “We refuse to identify any criminals with Albanians in general. Putting an ethnic stamp on crime is itself a crime,” Rama said on BBC radio today.

“Unfortunately, we are witnessing how we and our community are being rejected in this country for political reasons,” Rama said in response to Braverman’s comments. Britain’s home secretary, who has vowed to stop migrant boats, accused the opposition Labor Party of wanting to open doors to “Albanian criminals” in the British parliament last year.

Edi Rama, however, expressed his opinion on the matter in a meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in London, expressing hope that the incident would be overcome. Suella Braverman’s comments were prompted by problems with the migration flow, which reached a record number – approximately 45,000 people crossed the English Channel to the UK last year, a significant number of whom were Albanian citizens. The British government wants to resettle thousands of people to Albania, while seeking to improve relations with the Balkan country, in part to ease the process of repatriating migrants.
