Russia and Georgia are close to resuming direct flights. This statement was made by the head of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots Leonid Kalashnikov.

— I spoke with many officials of the highest level, including on the issues that we touched upon. Very sensitive issues that we need to resolve are air travel and the abolition of visas in Russia. I must say that we are on the verge of these decisions,” TASS quoted him as saying.

Kalashnikov added that it is difficult for him to judge when these decisions will take place and in what order.

In early February, the European Union threatened Georgia with sanctions in the event of the resumption of flights with Russia. Such a warning to the authorities was made by the official representative of the EU foreign service, Peter Stano. He also urged the Georgian leadership to think about the state of the aircraft fleet in Russia. In his opinion, because of the sanctions, it has become more difficult for carriers to update them, and therefore these aircraft are allegedly dangerous.
